And talking of kicks, this one starts with the Maclean’s own big house track ‘Feliz Casa’ (the Ian Breno dub that’s more rock-on than dub-off) and it ends with Frankel’s Rhodes Workout of ‘Feliz Casa’. So what do you get in the middle?

Well, Maclean, who is best known as part of James Murphy’s DFA team, takes us on a trip round some techno nu-disco and bangin’ house.

Not only is the “Austrian minimal wunderkind” Florian Meindl on the remix of ‘Here Today Gone Tomorrow’ on here (last seen on Crimea X’s Phoros EP and see our Florian interview HERE when he was ‘here today’ so to speak), a remix by The Revenge (last seen on these pages with Mademoiselle Caro & Franck Garcia Soldiers) some manic disco house ‘groove’ by A + O with some Theo Parrish remix of Detroit’s Rick Wilhite. And that’s not even half way!

Can you believe that DJ Kicks is now been going since C.J. Bolland’s mix in 1995. Dancefloors have moved on a bit since them and in terms of disco house, this must be one of the best yet. Once you’ve heard this you’ll definitely want to see Juan Maclean DJ live (which I suppose is the point of the series in the first place) or get the full tracks themselves; anything by Theo Parrish by himself or on the remix is a must but when it’s mixed into Florian’s track, this a bit special.

Other standout tracks include the Todd Terje remix of Shit Robot (for more Norwegian nu-disco, see HERE), Armando’s fem-pride ‘Don’t Take It’ and Maclean’s own train trip ‘Feels For Good’.

If you’re into ‘bounce’, the second half is about as good as it gets but the whole experience is really a celebration of Maclean’s selections and mix than any of the featured artist.

And for all the muso geeks, is that the coolest tat you’ve seen on a bloke since Richie Hawtin’s Plastikman? Get on up, feel so good!!
