V/A - Kindred Spirit - Witness Future Vintage Vol. 2

The latest from the Dutch version of Plug Research/Stones Throw Records brings together 15 tracks that touch the future with the sound of the past

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

I’ll not be drawn into comparisons with Vintage Grooves as that vintage is cast in stone but they’ve got together some favourites and a few that might have slipped by.

Holland’s own Flowriders (Roll On), a very Jazzanova remix (Heavy’s ‘Wonderlove’), the great Dwight Trible with Build An Ark with ‘Door Of the Cosmos’ and Rich Medina with ‘Holdin’ Up (that’s on the CD Connecting The Dots) and a remix of ‘Too Much’.

The album kicks off with a Doors mash-up and there’s some broken beat tracks but they do seem at their best with cosmic hip hop like ‘Till Tomorrow’ and Dutch soul. Nomo’s funky Afro ‘Moving In Circles’ has a rough live feel to it and in the same groove, ‘Say What’ really hurts.

In total contrast is the smoooooth of the ‘Too Much’ remix and Jniero Jarel (who was a guest on the Rich Medina album) with ‘ever present’ Vinia Mojica on ‘Big Bounce Theory Part 2’ that was previously out on a 12”. Still in smooth soul land, Liquid Spirits got Phonte to appear on a “fly love song”, ‘4Everyday’; one for the ladies.

I’ll never tire of ‘Door Of The Cosmos’ and while the roster of artists on this CD is very similar to Vol. 1 (except we’ve lost the mighty Peven Everett), you know Vol 3 will feature the brilliant Anthony Joseph and the Spasm Band so the future vintage looks safe in the good hands of Kindred Spirits. Don’t miss out.

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Door Of The Cosmos’, ‘Say What’, ‘Too Much’, ‘Wonderlove’, ‘Till Tomorrow’, ‘Moving In Circles’, ‘4Everyday’, ‘Holding Up’
