V/A - LateNightTales : Groove Armada

As you can imagine, the DJ/Producer/Festival organising duo known as Groove Armada know how to put together a high sea shanty of classic grooves for some LateNightTales

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

With GA (aka Tom Findlay and Andy Cato) getting ready for this years’ Lovebox festival, I wonder if any of the artists they’ve picked on the latest in the LateNightTales compilation will get on the bill?

A quick scan and you’ll quickly say no as they’ve really gone for a trawl of their all-time favourites from the 80s and 90s with a couple of leftfield lazer class sailors on tow. Five years on from their AnotherLateNight compilation on Azuli, the boys have lost none of their compiling and mixing skills. Bassline heavy track like the classic ‘Love Is The Drug’ (Roxy Music) and Ace’s ‘How Long’ sit happily alongside soul giants Marvin Gaye and Tami Tyrell.

Have you forgotten how good the Human League was? Or Depeche Mode? Or The Cure? Well here’s a timely reminder and in a guilty pleasure type way, I think its safe now to acknowledge ‘Glad To Know You’ is better than you ever thought it was. And then the Wizards Sleeve remix of Midlakes ‘Roscoe’ just gets better on ever listen (also picked up on Secret Love 4.

The ones from the back of the box, Joakim’s Remix of ‘Elle Et Moi’ in a dubby house François style and Finley Quaye (the next big thing 10 years ago) with a great dub version of his big hit, ‘Even After All’. And taking of next big things, Will Young seems to be in a Pop Idol-ness limbo but Andy Cato’s edit of ‘Friday’s Child’ is a big chill revelation. And there’s some more French weirdness with a Balearic version of Chris Rea’s ‘Josephine’.

If you’re of a certain age, like Tom and Andy, the release of Tubeway Army’s ‘Are Friends Electric’ on Beggars Banquet was life changing experience. Gary Numan’s Kraftwerk impersonation in blonde on Top Of The Pops launched an onslaught of tributesque synth based bands. Well, GA has had a stab at a cover version and it’s its subtleness that makes this a bit of a downtempo grower.

Still not convinced you need the 20th edition of LateNightTales? Try out the launch party at The Lock Tavern with a Tom Findlay DJ Set next Sunday (9th March). Located in the heart of Camden Town, the Late Night Tales Sessions take place every two months. So while It may not be Dingwalls, it’s the next best thing on a Sunday.

Gary Numan: Tubeway Army — Replicas Redux: 2008 Tour Edition (Beggars Banquet): Release date: 25-2-2008 “At the end of the ’70s Gary Numan, a 20-year old ex-punk from west London was virtually alone in seeing the possibility of a “synthesiser star”. Numan was posing on TOTP in harsh white light, bringing a touch of showbiz camp to the clipped, motorik repetitiveness of the song. From that moment on he was simultaneously branded “hero” and “villain”.
Mojo — March 2008 p45 “When we heard ‘Are Friends Electric?’ It was like the aliens had landed in the Bronx. More than Kraftwerk, Numan was the inspiration. He’s a hero. Without him they’d be no electro” — Afrika Bambaataa.
