V/A - Let's Boogaloo Vol. 4

If there’s an album compiled by DJ Andy Smith, that’s one thing. When it’s the latest in the Let’s Boogaloo series, you know it’s a must for “soul lovers and groove addicts”

Lets Boogaloo Vol 4

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

These compilations are the soundtrack to the Boogaloo Club in Milano that specialises in soul, funk, jazz, Latin — all that’s cool in old and new rare groove.

Andy Smith, who also excells at Trojan and Rockabilly, has done a Document without all that mixing getting in the way.

Kicking off with Eddie ‘Acid Jazz’ Roberts’ outfit, The New Mastersounds’ you know there’s going to be awesome Latin (Lebron Brother and Eddie Palmieri via Fania Records), a smattering of Northern (wow!, ‘Don’t Pretend’ by The Belles is as fresh as it was when it came out in 1966!) and some good time boogaloo vibes from Ralph Robles.

As impressive as modern exponents such as Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings or Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators are, you’ve got to take your hat off to Japan’s funk and soul answer to the Soil & “Pimp” Sessions, friends of Marva Whitney, Osaka Manaurail. ‘Down And Out’ is in the same vien as ‘Quick Sand’ that you’ll find on their current album Reality For The People (check the video).

The couple of tracks I’ve got reservations about are ‘They Say’ by The Ovations as it’s overly 60’s floor filler; an odd moan I know, but I’m at it again as ‘Ton Of Dynamite’ sounds like a couple of kilos to me. What they need is a stick of ‘Dynamite’ that closes the album.

There was a resurgence of interest in the music of James Carr when he died in 2001. A troubled man, he never garnered the respect or commercial rewards that he deserved when he was alive. The track included here is further evidence, as he’s got the best voice on this compilation (check the Ace Records site HERE and particularly The Complete Goldwax Singles compilation where you’ll also find ‘That’s What I Want To Know’)

Record Kicks also released Lack Of Afro’s his first release, ‘Wait A Minute’ (now out on his debut album Press On) so you know Mr. Nick Record Kicks knows his stuff. Combined with the dusty fingers of Andy Smith, as Bobby Garrett would say, “Keep It Coming”.
