V/A - Effleurement

For their hundredth Prikosnovenie release the ethereal enchanted folk label have put out a sampler of some of their best offerings to date.

Prikonovenie - Effleurement

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Prikosnovenie’s output is female vocal covering a great range of Celtic, Oriental, Slavonic and Balkanic singer-songwritters. Common to many of their groups are layered vocal ahhs and harps (Love Sessions 2 ‘Riviere de Lys’), floaty flutes (Elena Voynarovskaya) sometimes raising the heat to gothic trip hop rock (Loreena McKennitt and Maple Bee) but on the whole the emphasis is on some pretty stunning vocalists.

The other binding factor is it’s all totally head in the clouds stuff, floaty (I was most amused by reading that Caprice released three CDs based on Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings poetry, which is actually a lot more promising than it may at first sound). This label’s guiding attitude is summed up by the CD’s accompaniments: a set of cards with floaty fairy images (with distinctive designs by Sabine Adelaide who is responsible for much of the cover art for Prikosnovenie releases) and a few choice track titles: ‘Divine Goddess of Fertility’, ‘The Power of Wisdom’ and ‘The Green Pentacle’.

The best of the bunch comes in the form of French group Secret Vibes ‘Loove’, with its trancy didgeridoo, driving bass and intermittent beats. I loved Cecile Corbel’s ‘Le vent m’emporte’ with its Brittany Celtic vibe and the Balkan harmonies on Irfan’s ‘Fei’, and in the context of these other artists Maple Bee’s ‘Hello Eve’ and PinknRuby’s ‘Seven Sisters’ sat well.

If you’re unsure of whether to dive into the output of this pretty unique record label this compilation is surely the place to start.
