Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Nut is fresh from last week’s Gilles Peterson show (with Floating Points and Fatima), the latest compilation from Rinse FM is a bit of a race, but from the first track (Tom Trago remix of the huge O’Boogie’s track, ‘Paper Chaser’) to the last (Mr Beatnick with Ahu and the huger ‘I Know All The Bitches’) this is all good. From the refreshed dubstep classic ‘The Night’ to tracks for the hip-hop heads, ‘For The D’ by Eric Lau via a Harmonic 313 (who has only just released his debut When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence to Kashmere and 2Tall mixing the dubstep and the rap (as an aside, Kashmere’s ‘The Jazz’ should not be overlooked) and a big track from Roots’ Slime & Reason album. There another Jay Dee connection with Frank’n’Dank’s ‘Clap Hands’ and some big tunes from over there by Waajeed, Marco Polo, Black Pocket, Flying Lotus and Pattie Blingh (better known as Georgia Anne Muldrow). There’s not many folks that we haven’t featured on this album but some other names to watch out for are Warp’s next big thing, Hudson Mohawke, the solid gold that is Bullion and the guy who is everywhere at the moment, Floating Points (even if the track here is rather short, find yourself ‘Love Me Like This’ on the web to be really impressed). That said, why isn’t Simbad a massive star? His hit, ‘Soul Fever’ is sounding as good as it ever did and there’s an instrumental of his called ‘DNA Metamorphosis’ that’s a bit Tomitaesque. The album launch party is at Plastic People on Sunday (with Harmonic 313, Joker and Youngsta joining Nut) which should be a great night; Joker’s ‘Digi Design’ is one of the finds on the album. But it’s all good and if you’ve haven’t come across any of these artists, Rinse:08> is an excellent introduction. Whilst you can’t have it all, perhaps the only names missing are Dorian Concept (with his When Planets Explode album out now, Paul White (killer tracks coming soon) and Daisuke Tanabe or even Aaron Jerome; alright there’s probably more but these some of out favourites at FLY. What we can learn here from Nut’s choice is that whilst it’s alright to be ahead of the game and/or obscure in our musical choices, on other occasions just go for the best and some classics and in Rinse:08> he’s got the best of all; it is indeed the Nuts!
