Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. The little-known jazz of this Eastern European country gets an airing on Sonar Kollektiv’s new compilation though and a good thing it does too as you’re unlikely to hear it anywhere else. Compiled by Jazzanova and Stephan Steigleder Romanian Jazz is all taken from the Electrecord archives from the Seria Jazz series between 1966 and 1978. And beside all this it is hot. Really really hot, funky, edgy 60s jazz, whether it’s the storming clarinet solo on Marius Popp’s ‘Xybaba’ or the supreme builder ‘Latino’. It quickly becomes obvious why Sonar Kollektiv are dipping their fingers in this neglected source of tunes. It’s got a real feeling of having been developed in dark and dingy bars, blasting out behind closed doors well after closing time, and let slip at any point that it has been dug out of some dusty vinyl archive after years of neglect. Stick it on at a dinner party, wait for someone to ask what they are listening to and stun all and sundry with your incredibe taste in Romanian Jazz. Romanian Jazz is released on Sonar Kollektiv on 2 April. Links: |
