Independent in spirit and set up and being the home of Jazzanova, Sonar Kollektiv’s brand is a varied array of genres. The common thread, of course, is quality and a knowledge of what gets people dancing. There’s a few exceptions on the dancefloor side of things, but not on quality.

We’ve covered so many of the artists they’ve selected from their massive back catalogue, like Dimlite, Thief, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Domu (or here Umod), Isoul8, Markus Enochson and Canada’s Moonstarr, Boris’ outfit Micatone; you get the idea that we’re one of their many fans.

On Ten Years, Who Cares? CD1 is a Jazzanova compilation and CD2 is a mix CD and if you’ve seen them play out this summer, you’ll know it’s going to be expertly done. Certainly, all the heads in Jazzanova love a compilation, such as Kings Of Jazz, Broad Casting, Paz E Fotebol and the recent Computer Incarnations For World Peace that all show their range of interests and none disappoint.

Just to show how independently minded these guys are, their album launch party in Berlin will see the first appearance of the Sonar Kollektiv Allstars Orchestra assembled by Volker Meitz. And it’s a proper orchestra, string section, the lot! A Heritage Orchestra for a record label! (which reminds me, don’t forget the Jazzanova remix of Heritage Orchestra’s ‘Skybreaks’).

The list of guests for the party night looks truly awesome, including Wahoo, Eva Be and Christian Prommer (whose interpretation of ‘Strings Of Life’ must be in the top ten tracks of the year, album promised soon).

When they started in 1997, 2007 must have looked along way away; if not impossibility. In a week when we received the last ever issue of Straight No Chaser (I still can’t quite believe it) after 20 years promoting our kind of Fly music, will Sonar Kollektiv be around in 2017 for Twenty Years, Who Cares? It seems along way away but it’s up to us, we should all care. RIP Straight No Chaser, Sonar Kollektiv, ten more years!!!!
