V/A - Supperclub Beauty (Compiled by Pathaan)

This is the third helping from the Supperclub from their ‘nine sins’ menu. Compiled and mixed by Pathaan of the Asian Network, you can guarantee the 2 CD set is a thing of true beauty.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

If you’ve caught Pathaan’s Musical Rickshaw radio show last week, on which he played the Plump DJs latest on Finger Lickin’ (the Stanton Warriors remix of ‘Shifting Gears’ and a track off the excellent Thievery Corporation album, Ursula 1000 and the Bulgarian State Radio & Thelevision Femalie Choir(!) along with a World Odyssey Mix by Shri, you know this guy is into FLY global beats.

So Pathaan is a super choice of Supperclub residents. These guys don’t exactly lounge around as this is the third ‘sin’ compilation following on from Addicition (Michael Anthony and Todd Christensen) and Arrogance (DJ Dhr. Robijn).

Pathaan is obviously more of the global beats than the deep house but it’s certainly a happy mix that you’d expect from a master. Highlights on CD1 are numerous; like we know Soma Records are more than just Sub Club heads, Octogen mixes up Detroit and minimal ambient and the beautifully named ‘Sunset Over Tao’ is one of his best (not sure when the next 12” is coming out, remixes of ‘The Journeyman’ (taken from the album Gindofask) but another highly recommend purchase. Bardo State are classic emotional popsters but Pathaan’s own mix of ‘Seneca’ nearly takes us to the next level and a remix of Vieux Farka Touréis proof that the desert blues are not too far from a club dancefloor. One label that that prooves that point is the excellent Infiné and Donso’s ‘Waati’ was one of the tracks of last year and it’s still sounding fine here.

The second CD kicks off at a pace with the Doors tribute ‘Break On Through’ by DJ Disse followed by old favourites, Transglobal Underground with ‘Emotional Yoyo’ from Moonshout. Los Chicharrons keep up the musical globetrotting and by the time we get to the final track ‘Fragment Seven’ (a reinterpretation of the classic chill ‘Les Fleurs’ by Kenneth Bager (also check ‘Fragment Zero’ on Brownswood Bubblers 3 you’ll want to start the journey all over again. Other Pathaan ‘finds’ are Munty (‘Delhi To Detroit’), Cheb Hamid and keeping in the food theme, ‘Table 5’ by Chawla and Anderson. And then Paul Leonard-Morgan’s ‘Seen From The Outside’ (from the Filmtales album) emerges like a beautiful butterfly on this compilation.

Beautiful artwork by Neil Duerden and what with the recent opening of Buddha Bar in London or if you’re looking to recapture Pathaan’s sunset gigs in Ibiza or Big Chill Festival, this is the album for you.
