Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. The first track is pure quality as we don’t hear enough of Owusu & Hannibal (remember ‘Blue Jay’?) or Watch TV (aka Rubén García) or DJ Vadim for that matter. A great start then topped by the title track of Kinny & Horne’s 2005 album Forgetting To Remember (on the always impressive Tru Thoughts label). Caitlin ‘Kinny’ Simpson is half Jamaican, half Native Indian, born in Canada, a classically trained Opera singer and only teamed up with Espen Horne when she was living in Norway! I’d say that was global and FLY. After the big ups for Christian Prommer’s Drumlesson on the latest Sonar Kollektiv compilation (SK200, and his own brilliant on the album Drum Lesson Vol. 1), here he turns up on remix duty ‘The Theme’ by Hot Lizard from 1995; re-surfaced this year on NRK with a 2008 Charles Webster remixes but Prommer’s is the best. Talking of deep tech-house, another of our favourites is Henrik Schwarz and ‘Arthur’ is one of his best classical-gamelan-ambient jobs. Far more obvious is Ralf Gum’s tribute to garage/loft house ‘All This Love For You’. And that’s the beauty of these compilations (or should that be jealousy?) as Alan picks tracks from loads of different genres. Like, the New Mastersounds who have been funkin’ since 2000 whose first single was produced by the Northern Soul and funk expert DJ Keb Darge. Here they get tweaked by Lack Of Afro (he of Press On in a laid back mode with ‘Idle Time’. And that one glides into ‘Hard Twelve’ (taken from the 2005 album of the same name and not the latest Beat Assailant album, Imperial Pressure). Possibly the best bit on the first CD! But there’s some heavy competition over on CD2 as it’s less electric and more ‘journey’ like starting off with Adi Dick. He grew up with Barnaby (of the Black Seeds) and was most recently scene in Fat Freddy’s Drop. ‘Our Place’ shows that he’s more than just a side man. We then slip into some soulful hip-hop and then there’s Fink’s modern classic ‘Pretty Little Thing’ (those with long memories will recall that I included this one in my guest mix for Timeless Inspiration a while ago; in-between Fink’s ‘Pretty Little Thing’ and an early Aaron Jerome remix of D’Nell’s ‘This Thing (Session 95 if you want to hunt it down on ‘net). Jazz legend Mark Murphy is back working with Finland’s finest, the Five Corners Quintet on their new brand new album just released, but ’ Secrets’ is jazzy percussive house stuff (one to investigate further I think). From then on, we just get deeper into the goove and it’s time to get dancing and keep dancing for the rest of the CD (apart from the ambient interlude of The Black Dog’s ‘Ghost Vexations ‘). The big ending comes courtescy of Roberto Rodriguez and Max C, but another highlight is the vibe house of the improbably named Bart Hendrix. Just a point on the artwork, not sure exactly how you photograph Jealousy but I’d say Krijn van Noordwijk has nailed it with his portraits of model Jayneen (check out the cover!) Apparently there’s a ‘clean up’ operation going on in Amsterdam at the moment but that won’t affect the Supperclub as musically they’ve cleaned up already. Ideal timing for some party action, I’m just jealous of all those folks who’ve actually got tickets to go to the actual Supperclub; should be a blast!
