Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Now don’t be confused; this has nothing to do with Jonny Trunk or some sub-label of Trunk Records (see HERE for latest [non-Chelsea related] JT references). Whilst the idea of a Trunk Records house sub-label is rather appealing, this Trunkfunk is the real thing from Sweden. Owner, DJ, producer and all-things Gothenburg, Fredrik Nyberg (aka DJ Nibc) has compiled, mixed and edited a ‘best of’ CD that features tracks that have been in DJ notables as diverse as Timo Maas, Dubfire, DJ T, Slam and The Advent. Now these are the DJ types that get featured in DJ Mag’s end of year top 100 DJs but if they play Trunkfunk, fair enough. Kicking of with the Stuffa’s big tune, ‘A Million Secrets (two different mix versions, one by the incredible Ramon Tapia who has recently released a fantastic new album Sunka Sanka), Stuffa’s own dub remix of Trevor Loveys/Affie Yusuf/Spoek ‘Bitch Fight’ (plus a Jesse Rose and Oliver $ remix) and the stuttering David Ekenbäck remix of Stuffa’s ‘Pretty Girls’. Now is that gives the impression that the Trunkfunk family are incestuous. Well they do it under cover of night and it’s probably true if the Style of Eye remix of David Ekenbäck’s ‘Nairu’ is anything to go by; particularly bangin’ (even if an air raid warning if going on at the same time). And the Pig & Dan (last seen HERE with ‘Monjon’) remix of The Touch’s ‘Heart Of The City’ is particularly hot, John Dahlbäck on the remix of a track by Tyken (aka Nyberg & Carl Johan Rydén) and a big tune to end with, ‘Le Night Dominator’ by The Touch (as remixed by DJ Assault). Regulars at Gothenburg based club nights run by DJ Nibc (The Eye and RA will know what to expect but it’s definitely worth checking out as over the years the likes of Justice, Carl Craig, Danny Krivit, Radioslave to mention just a few have spun their tunes for the knowledgeable crowd. So Trunkfunk might not be the most productive of labels over the years (say compared to Ninja Tune with its 20 year history) but that is usually a sign of quality and they do cater for the fan as the vinyl releases are all collectors editions with excellent artwork (see collage cover of this release); and what with the quality mixes and artists involved, few can deny that when it comes to ‘Deliverance’, DJ Nibc is the man.
