V/A - The Hub Compilation

The Hub’s home is the Studius Building in Clerkenwell and on a Friday night it will be showcasing new talent of the stylish type mirroring the surroundings.

Hub Compilation

Of course, “new” is relative as your Fly Global Music experts have been on the case already with some of the artists featured here but it’s good to catch up with them again and some names we don’t know.

As a longtime fan of musician, producer, DJ, head of Further Out Recordings all-round good bloke and recently entitled husband, Richard E caused some cosmic dust to spin around Saturn when ‘The Call’ first came out earlier this year. Featuring the gorgeous vocals of Jennifer Moore, it was a huge favourite at the much missed Saturn Radio gigs. Now producing with Mrs E, a.k.a. Annabel (lee), watch out for some By The Sea gigs.

Talking of gorgeous vocals, new names to us are Lea Lea Jones (Chip And Spin Records) and Kate Bannatyne (Backwater Records) who provide a couple of contemporary jazz-pop tunes

Bombay Monkey apparently hail from a farm in deepest Kent (where else?) and they are influenced by the Ninja Tune/Coldcut cut-up merchants which nicely leads into ‘Everyday’ by Jonny “Jus’Listen” Miller; the synths and vibes get me every time on this one. And perhaps due to all his influences, (see Peterson, Forge, Jones), the track by Jus Listen’s Tim Scott sounds very familar.

We know Ok-Ma from the single, ‘Goflow’ and current office favourite feat. Lea Lea Jones ‘Bwoygal’ so luckily, in addition to ‘Inna Blink’ we get a double portion of Ok_Ma as they produced the jazzy hip hop of Choi (‘The Way We Are’).

If there is one track that might sum up the vibe on this compilation, I think I’d pick ‘Lesser Things’ by Djinji Brown (also see Ethnic Heritage Ensemble) as it hits the peak of future hip hoppin’ downtempo soul and jazzy funk.

To round off, the last track reminds us it has been a year since Brownswood Bubblers came out. As Peterson prepares for his big party at The End (13th Oct.), Yellowtail, this time via Sick Trumpet (who seems to be everywhere of late) gets high ‘NRG’ in a broken ragga tip.

Not sure what Studius is all about but if the music policy is anything like this compilation, it’s definitely the place to be.

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘The Call’, ‘Everyday’, ‘Inna Blink’, ‘Oh My’, ‘Zealous’, ‘The Way We Are’, ‘Lesser Things’, ‘B.S.T’, ‘NRG’
