V/A - Trickski Presents Members Of The Trick

No Russian oligarchy involved in this one as Yannick Labbé and Daniel Becker bring their Trickski 12” magic to this CD compilation.

Trickski

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Initially spotted in 2005 by the taste movers Peterson, Tiefshwarz, Carl Craig, Peter Kruder and the like, the Jazzanova team quickly signed up Trickski and got them sorted with a Member Of The Trick 12” series on Sonar Kollektiv.

Adding talent spotting to their own production and DJing talents, the results are a suprise mix of European meets Detroit techno.

The first track is by a duo that sound like they should be in My Name Is Earl, Leroy & Darnell, the arcade game of ‘4 Members Only’ leads us into the equally improbably sounding Schmutzig de Mutizig with ‘Thank You Daniel’. This electro Ital disco rave bounce is actual by Irfane (he of ‘A Little Bit Of Lovin’ and now Outlines debut album, Our Lives Are Too Short).

Four of the twelve tracks are by Trickski themselves and one solo tracks from Labbé. ‘Move Me’ features Labbé in a LCD Soundsystem/Talking Head style vocal, “So you think…” which is a touch obvious. Prefer the big bounce synth on ‘Paperbitch’ and the subtle classical-ital build-up of ‘Powerhouse’ and ‘Grace’. Left to his own devices, Labbé’s ‘Gallieni’ is closer to a Parrish/Craig mix of drone meets snowflake synth.

When you need excellent cameo vocals, the man that always delivers is Hubert Tubbs; Stereotyp, Megablast & Makossa, Al-Haca all know he’s big in soul that is what Detroit Hi-Techness is all about. Add to that list of fans now Skwerl as Mr. Tubbs turns up on ‘All Woman’

We had a period a while back where everyone was from Finland, Five Corners Quintet, Teddy Rok, Jukka Eskola and a whole lot more. To this list we can now add Future Beat Investigators who perhaps don’t live up to their name with a “I wanna be loved”, but the hypnotic-synth electro dub but it’s definitely a club fav to get down to.

The set ends (almost) with a feature on Balkan DJ/Producer, Solomun with ‘Keep Control’ (in a Pantha Du Prince remix mode) and the goth sounding (only in name) and future 12”, ‘Black Rose’. Not dark but deep strings make this track stand out but the best of the lot is the bonus track, Trickski’s remix of Forss’ ‘Journeyman’. Previously only released in Japan, has a little of all what’s has all gone on before (file under train inspired).

Hard to say that there’s a particular style that you have to adopt to become a Member of the Trickski team. Perhaps Sub-4*4 Hi-tek which doesn’t really help but they’ve got a pioneering spirit which will bring them ever increasing attention I’m sure and this CD can only help spread the word.

Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Journeyman’, ‘All Woman’, ‘Gallieni’, ‘Paperbitch’, ‘All I Want’,
