V/A - Witness Future Vintage Vol.2

Displaying the broad skills of artists on their roster, Dutch label Kindred Spirits have compiled a splendid mix of varied beats.

I.N.T. begins the proceedings with an inspired take on The Door’s ‘Riders in the Storm’, ‘Dickriders’ glides majestically with wonderful drums and idyllic use of the original classic organ riff. My last encounter with this talented producer and DJ was with the incredible Timeless Interpretations compilation released on another Dutch label, Dopeness Galore. I.N.T. contributed a couple of songs, with ‘Beat Rise’ impressing greatly — a fantastic composition built using samples of Chet Baker and Phillip Catherine’s ‘Beatrice’.

Nicky Guiland’s velvety voice sounds superb as she features on the next two songs. Kid Sublime’s ‘Somethin’ About Your Love’, which echoes influences of 4Hero and Jazzanova, then that famous German sextet feature with their remix of Heavy’s ‘Wonderlove’. Originally released on Jazzanova’s Remixes 2002-2005 and dedicated to Minnie Ripperton, Guiland sounds similar to the late great singer. This breathtaking remix deserves to be heard and with such a beautiful arrangement it demonstrates how skilled the Sonar Kollektiv founders are, with strings and changes worthy of Charles Stepney.

Fresh sounds, beautiful arrangements, punchy beats & super wobbly low-ends

‘Roll On’ by Flowriders is quality broken beat. Vincent Helbers’ keys are accomplished giving the song plenty of worth and Spoonface sings excellently. Meikbar also provides broken beats with ‘Spread’ full of super wobbly low-end frequencies, this promising producer also has a delicious song on his Myspace, ‘Liston’. Well-ordered, the selection moves fluidly into Afrobeat inspired music. The LA ensemble Build An Ark’s ‘Door of the Cosmos’ is rich with outstanding hand drumming and gentle flute — akin to Adele Sebastian, while Nomo’s ‘Moving in Circles’ has trademark booming horn solos and illustrates what a tremendous group they are.

Two Rich Medina tunes are included along with Chico Mann’s lively ‘Say What’. The compilation concludes with my top three cuts that all maraud along at head-bopping tempo. Jnerio Jarel’s ‘Big Bounce Theory PT 2’ bounces immensely with great laidback energy and Vinia Mojica’s sultry tones. The final two songs are by guys who also contributed to the awesome Beat Dimensions series on Rush Hour. Tom Trago’s ‘Dirtdegree’ has a punchy beat, flickering sirens and beeps with deep bass that squelches and delights while ‘Raw’ War’ by Mwëslee is a mind-blowing three minutes of delectable beat making.

A first-rate compilation, due for release on April 30th.
