V/A - Ziggy Marley In Jamaica

How hard can it be to pick 16 of your favourite reggae tracks for a compilation album? Well if your after a Primer 101, look no further than Ziggy Marley’s selction on this new CD for the near perfect choice.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

I suppose it must help being one of Bob’s offspring when it comes to licencing especially if you’re including tracks by The Wailers, Peter Tosh’s classic ‘Legalize It’ aswell as your own ‘Make Some Music’.

Ziggy was the first of the sons to follow his father on the worldwide reggae stage and it was always going to be impossible to emulate him but I’m sure all he wanted to do was ‘Make Some Music’ as it was in his genes. I could well be time to reassess Ziggy’s work as it’s hard to fault his taste.

Sticking to the safe teritory of 60s and 70s eras, this is hit after hit after hit; just check the tracklisting. Toots & The Maytalls, Jimmy Cliff and Desmond Dekker kick things off but it’s not long before we get roots consiousness going with The Abyssinians ‘Sataa Masagana’ from Forward Onto Zion (great cover). The Abyssinians will be at the Jazz Cafe soon (7th September) joined by toaster Dillinger; who must be in Vol. 2 with ‘Cocaine On My Brain’. And what about ‘Bounty Killer’ by Barrington Levi?

Hang on, lets stick with what we’ve got; the sweet vocals of The Heptones (‘Book Of Rules’), Dennis Brown’s classic ‘Money In My Pocket’, Horace Andy’s equally classic ‘Skylarking’ and the Gregory ‘Cool Ruler’ Isaacs ‘Poor And Clean’ (the alternative must have been ‘Night Nurse’).

You want find Mrs. Hectic too far away from Black Uhuru’s ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner’ so more than happy to see that one. The strangest omission for me is why no ‘Welcome To Jamrock’ by brothers Steven “Ragga Muffin” and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley? And the running order gets a little wiffy; I think I’d finish with Delroy Wilson’s ‘Better Must Come’ but that’s jsut being very picky.

As it follows Mistajam’s Gilles Peterson takeover last week (see the links below the similar artists he picked as Ziggy) this is just what you need if you are new to reggae and haven’t inherited a stack of classic from your parents (as Mistajam owned up to on the show). It wouldn’t be a bad idea to get the excellent The Rough Guide To Dub either whilst your at it. All we need now is a bit of sunshine so it’s 90 degrees in the shade.

“I love reggae music. I grew up hearing and hanging around some of the greats. My father, Peter, Bunny, Toots, Gregory, Dennis and many more. This album represents songs that make me laugh, sing and think. It is music that is relevant to the human spirit today and will be relevant tomorrow. What I love is the diversity of the themes and artists. Love songs like “Money In My Pocket” by Dennis Brown, spiritual songs like Satta Masagana by The Abyssinians and party songs like “You Can Get It” by Jimmy Cliff. These songs make my vibes high. There’s nothing else like it.”
