Villa Nah - Running On / Ways To Be

With the end of the footie season, from the name of this lot sound, they sound like they should be some blue nosed anti-Martin O’Neill collective; but they don’t even come from Birmingham!

Of course they don’t come from Birmingham; obviously the duo of Juho Paalosmaa and Tomi Hyyppä took their name from the suburbs where they grew up in Finland. Now the East End of Helsinki might not match the mean streets of Aston but their musical heritage (synth pop) could equally be Duran Duran as their cited influences of Sonic Youth (you’d never know) and Yellow Magic Orchestra (yes you could tell).

‘Running On’ is a strange mix of YMO/Robert Miles where “music about dreams and time” meet. ‘Ways To Be’ is more Tubeway Army for duo; Juho writes the songs and sings, Tomi supplies the vintage synths and analogue technology.

This release is another in the esteemed Moshi Moshi Singles Club series and with ‘Ways To Be’ already winning Finland’s ‘Song Of The Year’ (Dance Section), expect some large hair and OMD sensibilities to the fore.

The duo’s stunning debut album Origin is released on May 17th on the Keys of Life label (part of the Sähkö Recordings/PUU family), with tracks such as ‘All The Days’ and ‘Rainmaker’ mixing haunting dancefloor numbers with a Balearic tint, ‘Some Kind Of Dream’ and ‘Remains Of Love’ have an instant 80s pop while ‘Envelope’ and ‘Kiss And Tell’ swoon and shimmer as they unfurl.

Villa Nah - Villa Yeah! Come on Randy, get ya cheque book out.
