Wahoo - 'I'm Your Lover'

Lily Allen watch out girl, as you’re not going to believe this, Wahoo have gone all ska and have the big summer bounce tune

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Wahoo you may recall are Berlin’s Georg von dem Bussche (aka Georg Levin) and Steffen ‘Dixon’ Berkhahn who got together originally to do remixes for their mates Jazzanova and and then had a big 12” on Sonar Kollectiv, ‘Take Over Me’ b/w ‘Make ‘Em Shake It’ before it went global when re-issued by Defected Records.

That was three years ago, so while they still do Wahoo remix work, like the recently released Ben Westbeech ‘Hang Around’ and ‘Oggi’ (originally off Peng Peng), they’ve been hard at work on material for the forthcoming album due for release in August.

The Georg Levin edit of ‘Don’t Take It Personal’ got an early play by long-time supporter Gilles Peterson (who was as brilliant as ever at the smoke filled Orange Room’s Friday just gone). This b-side is more what you’d expect of the Jazzanova protégé with soulfulness to the fore with a big Modern Room session feel about it. The Orange Rooms swayed to it big time (as if Frankie Beverley was in the house) along with the other big tune of the moment with a Northern Soul connection, Pilooski’s edit of ‘Beggin’ by Frankie Valli.

Dixon is one of the most popular DJs in Berlin (Innercity Visions, E-Werk, The Tresor) and recently complied Body Language Vol. 4 for Get Physical (you know the one with the strange, but oddly appealing, cover).

So it’s still a shock that their Wahoo combined efforts could produce ‘I’m Your Lover’. With a gutteral ‘toast’ from Basement Jaxx’s Felix Buxton; lyrics are sexually-specialist-entendre but there’s a big catchy chorus of “I’m your lover, I’m not your friend.”

Don’t take it personal, but the b-side is the one for me and a big value release. These boys know who to produce tunes for the dance floor and I expect the album, Take It Personal to be full of them.

Neil Homer @ Orange Rooms, Southampton — What do you think will be the most significant change (if any at all) that the [smoking] ban will have on UK clubbing? “Long term detrimental changes on UK clubbing? None. We’ll definitely have healthier clubbers…”
