Wired Desire - Barely Illegal

If you thought it strange that Charlie Gillett was back in love with Afro beat, Wired Desire have given me the hots for some good ol’ guitar based Rock’n’Roll!

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

I thought that I’d had enough of guitar based bands, although we’re always happy to feature the Blues at FLY (like The Rough Guide To The Blues or old hands like Sugar Blue or the reworked Chess Moves). It’s the heavy end of rock that usually really doesn’t do it anymore. Even more impressive then that Wired Desire then have blown out our ears with their rockin’ boogie and that the five piece band (an average age of 22) have only been going for 2 years!

Perhaps it was seeing Buddy Guy before Mulatu Astatke and the Ethiopiques at Glastonbury that set the seed, but these guys have a raw energy that’s not pretty boy friendly. Such that Nazareth have said on their last tour that Wired Desire are “the best support band we’ve had in 40 years!”

I’m not surprised as these guys come at ya like Wolfsbane did 10 years ago (and in the process they signed to Def Jam and were produced by Rick Rubin who’s credit list include Slayer, Public Enemy, Johnny Cash, Mars Volta and AC/DC). Now comparisons with the emergence of these 5 rockers and the start of AC/DC’s career is inevitably as the debut EP is full of classic rockness; the difference being Wired Desire are from Glasgow (where all the best rockers come from, well Alex Harvey at least).

The EP isn’t officially out until October but they’ve got a load of copies with them on Tour (see dates below) and if you can resist ‘No One Sleeps’ or the guitar on ‘Ride’, you’re a stronger man than I (hear the tracks on myspace). Loud seems to be the theme of the week after SOIL’n’PIMP Sessions and the Neil Cowley Trio at the Roundhouse Death Jazz special and there’s nothing wrong with a bit of ‘The Hard Stuff’ every now and again. Damn Hot!

(Bon Scott, Rock In Peace).
