Y Diwygiad - The Reformation EP

“Y Diwygiad, that’s easy for you to say”.

Y Diwygiadb The Reformation EP

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

That’s what Rob da Bank memorably spat out (eventually) earlier this year when trailing Huw Stephen’s Radio 1 show with Y Diwygiad meets Daedelus session.

News reaches me everyone was so happy with this collaboration, the Y Diwgiad crew are going to visit Daedelus in Los Angeles early in the New Year. Daedelus is then coming to Europe on Tour in February (see dates below). So as we eagerly await that, it’s only right that we should check out the Y Diwygiad EP they released on Skipping Beats earlier in the year.

There’s no doubting that if there’s any musical barriers to their brand of hip hop, their multi-lingual abilities should overcome any translation problems — the duo spit rhymes in Breton, English, French, Spanish and Welsh no less.

They first met at a rappers vs. poets event and with the generally heavy-duty beats, there’s also a cross-cultural element to them. ‘Running Parallel’ brings in the choir vocals of Geraint Jarman and the dub twiddling of anti-establishment-Welsh-language hip hop “inventors” Llwybr Llaethog. There are some great couplets in this one (“spread you like a sheet on Bill Gates’ Excel”) as it bounces along in a dark and dirty Goth cathedral.

Y Diwyiad translates as The Reformation and 2006 seems as good a time as any to have one. The track, ‘Reformation Intro’ brings in deep synth beats while ‘Showdown’ is more obviously, UK hip hop with some Breton style beats.

‘Planet Rock’ tips its hat to the original classic Afrika Bambaataa & Soulsonic Force version and it’s a free-download on the Skipping Beats site. ‘Sound Of The Revolution’ and ‘Rippin MC’s’ are more straight ahead rap tracks (relatively) but I can’t wait to find out how they went down at the Dublab. Not only is there a trip to LA to catch up with Daedelus, there are also plans for some live dates, a recording session and a TV documentary.

So not as half as scary as you might imagine, think of a Welsh Zero dB of hip hop with Magmaisms (check out their MySpace site, see links below). John Peel would have loved this and with ‘Running Parallel’ they’ve a track that’s really standing out.

Hectic Mix nomination: ‘Reformation Intro ’ with ‘Running Parallel’
