Young Fathers - Automatic / Dancing Mantaray

It’s about now that artists tipped as The next big thing back in January start to get themselves sorted and it’s looking automatic from the Young Fathers.

Now if you’re thinking what happened to that pop rap, electro, synth-pop, boy band that looked like Outkast doing a mix of De La Soul meets Spank Rock power pop that supported Simian Mobile Disco on tour?

Well the trio known as Young Fathers, a multi-national team (Liberia/Nigeria/Scotland) known individually as Ally, Kayus and G are back. The tour with SMD led to the jointly produced track ‘Turn Up The Dial’ that turned up on SMD’s 2009 album, Temporary Pleasure.

But they’ve been working hard since their first LP in 2008, produced by Timothy London (releasing the single ‘Straight Back On It’) they have appeared Big Brothers’ Big Mouth (not the current one that’s surprisingly good at the moment as a last hurrah) and appearing with Shaun Ryder’s Black Grape, Esser, Dizzee Rascal, The Noisettes, La Roux, Grandmaster Flash, Yo Majesty and Annie Mac amongst others.

AA single is produced by critically acclaimed producer Ginz from the world of dubstep and whilst ‘Automatic’ is a bit of a computer bleep race around the fair ground the flip, ‘Dancing Mantaray’ is a bit more measured synthed-out head nod.

All good signs for the forthcoming album and more live dates and festival appearances are on the cards. What is a dancing mantaray anyway?
