Yppah - Gumball Machine Weekend

Yppah (pronounced “Yippah”) is a Mexican-American from Texas aka Joe Corrales, Jr. and he’s back on Ninja Tune with an brand new EP prior to the new album coming out and it’s stunning!

Back in 2006 there was the album You Are Beautiful At all Times so it’s been a while working up to the new ablum but if it’s a superb as the Gumball Weekend Machine we’re in another monster.

We’re told that the EP “draws on a cultural heritage that took in My Bloody Valentine alongside hip hop and which is heavily influenced by various forms of electronic music, psychedelic soul and rock”. Even though Rob da Bank is starting a mini Shoegazing revival (see his compilation Sci-Fi-Lo-Fi Vol. 3 (Shoegazing 1985 - 2007) and Sonic Cathedral are releasing a Cathedral Classics compilation in the same vien), Yppah’s ‘Gumball Machine Weekend’ is the dreamy end of the genre with some DJ Shadow thrown in (drum breaks and twinkle piano),

Not so sure about the Pollination remix but all the others are brilliant starting with ‘Shutter Speed’ that’s very Carlos NiƱo psychedelic cosmic love on the Spaceways tip with some beautiful whispery flute and whilst ‘They Know What Ghost Know’ starts the same, but it’s not long before it gets into “West Coast rock re-imagined as trance-rite, a spooky, echo-heavy drum-roll-filled set of repetitions and overlaps”; indeed DJ Shadow would have been proud of this one his heyday, or Jim Morrison, or Randy California, or John Cipollina or even Deke Leonard for that matter.

And talking of Rhinos, Winos + Lunatics, ‘The Drag’ is posibily the best of the lot an a big drum beat with feedback in overdrive over a fuzzy bass and choral organ echoes - must be brilliant this one live.

The new album is called They Know What Ghost Know but you’ll have to wait until 18th May for that one but worth checking out the myspace site for new songs in the player and vids of him and the live band at the recent SXSW festival.
