Zombie Zombie - Zombie Zombie Plays John Carpenter

Obviously Zombie Zombie don’t literally ‘play’ John Carpenter but they certainly play some of the best of his film music and it’s pretty scary as you’d imagine.

A couple of housekeeping points to start with. First up, from the look of the sleeve you might think this was released on D.C. Recordings label as the artwork has been done by ‘regular’ of that manor, La Boca (as in Death Before Distemper 2, Ghost Feeder, Paddell Cell and many more). Also, you’ve just missed this French duo of Etienne Jaumet and Cosmic Neman perform live in London for Holloween (and my spy tells me that they were very good as one of them has a Theremin linked up to a synth and the drummer is very NEU!- now that’s pretty cool in my book).

So with four corking covers of John Carpenter OST themes and a bit of Ennio Morricone thrown in for good measure, this is one of the best releases this month; especially as ‘Assault On Precinct 13’ (that features the funky Wah-Wah guitar of Romain Turzi) the original version being one of my favourite films ever. And then there’s ‘The Bank Robbery’ (from Escape From New York), the main theme from Escape From L.A. and Morricone’s theme from The Thing and, of course, ‘Halloween’ itself.

Versatile initially made their name as the home of Château Flight, Pépé Bradock, Franck Roger and lots more good things French (and this release was recorded & mixed by Joakim at his studio), so the Zombie Zombie is a little of a departure from their roots, but no less welcome.

Geek note: genre in itunes “unclassifiable”!
