Zoo Brazil - It's Only A Mixtape

With the ‘In The Mix’ mixtape feature in The Independent this week and renewed interest in the art form, time to dig out Zoo Brazil’s It’s Only A Mixtape and give it a spin.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

OK, it’s not a true mixtape in the sense of Tim Walker’s feature but it’s not bad for a mixed compilation of top electro, techno and house that’s certainly got a touch of the old skool about it as Zoo Brazil (aka John Andersson and Johan Emmoth from Sweden) are not afraid of having a few of their own tracks on it.

Not only that, it features a couple of top tunes. Out of the Rainer Weichhold academy comes, the M.A.N.D.Y. remix of their top tune ever, ‘Push Push’ and a remix by Tim ‘Let The Beats Roll’ Deluxe of ‘Moss’ by ‘Gus Gus’ (a couple of classics if you ask me).

Getting back to Tim’s piece, it worth checking out (see the links below) as there are a few likely FLY suspects, like Jamie Lidell (who’s latest album Jim is on WARP, home of Flying Lotus), Isobel Campbell, Lightspeed Champion and “singer-songwriter” Billy Bragg.

I must admit, I’ve burned a few C90s in my time and it’s a guarantee that a track from Mr Bragg’s Mr. Love & Justice of earlier this year is going to turn up on my 2008 John Peel Day Mix. Mr. CDR disc may have taken over from TDK tape as my weapon of choice, but I never understood how home taping was killing music. Even now, a C90 is still very useful if your transport of choice is an un-XZIBIT -pimped ride with an old style radio/cassette player (Blauplunkt of course). Those were the days! But for a variety bag of global music such as FLY, the mixtape will always have a special place in our hearts.

Also, due to the individual nature of a mixtape, it lends it self to some original art and the cover to It’s Only A Mixtape by Matt Stuart is just perfect balance of lo-fine art clever. I could look at it all day.

In the mix: The rebirth of the mixtape “You can download any song that takes your fancy. You can store thousands in a box that fits in the palm of your hand… But isn’t something, well, lacking? The heyday of the DIY compilation cassette may be over, but as Tim Walker discovers, a new generation of music lovers is falling for the romance of the C90” Monday, 14 July 2008
