Acida - La Vida Real

Argentine singer-songwriter Alina Gandini and producer husband Tweety Gonzales are the husband and wife duo that make up Acida, and their debut album La Vida Real features a rare diversity of musical styles and is superbly produced from start to finish. Unfortunately, however, it loses its grip after an excellent start, with too many predictable melodies.

As the name implies, Acida's style is marked by an acid jazz influence, and it is blended with Latin pop, bossanova, and tango, with a European slant from producer Chris Allison (The Beta Band, Coldplay).

The opening track 'Moda' is an interesting mix of dark psychedelic edginess and playful, sugary pop -- the tantalising and often extreme changes of mood being one of La Vida Real's most compelling features.

'Nadie Como Vos' is lush, floating trip-hop, in complete contrast with the upbeat 'El Tiempo Amable', where Gandini's vocals are at their best, evoking an awed child at a fairground.

'Presente Permanente' is the first let-down of the album: an unrelenting, plodding 4/4 beat and barely any melody to speak of. The band regain some form with the more complex break beats of 'Las Palabras' and the sitar-based 'Perdida', but by this stage of the album Acida seem to be stuck in their comfort zone, with surprises or changes in pace or mood in short supply.

The title track is the album's strongest - a pleasing, wistful ballad accompanied by echoing guitars and drums. The track that follows: 'To Nunca Te Doy Paz', is very similar, however, and gains nothing from a passionless two-minute piano introduction.

A third consecutive melancholic track, 'Que Te Dicen Todos', is lingering on one mood a little too long, and sadly La Vida Real ends on one of its weakest songs - 'Simular', a cross between rock and techno that captures the best aspects of neither style.

La Vida Real is a highly accomplished album made by some of Argentina's leading musicians. But despite a few exciting moments, it falls short of being truly satisfying.
