Azymuth - Azimuth (Remastered & Remixed)

This is the incredible, seminal debut album from Azymuth that sounds nothing like it was recorded in 1975 and if the re-mastering doesn’t do it for you, there’s a bonus CD of newly commissioned remixes and re-edits by all your favourites

Azymuth Azimuth

Before you get to the remixes, the original album, which we are told has never been released outside of Brazil, is a spectacular collection of Latin jazz-funk samba tracks.

The opening track, ‘Linha do Horizonte’ set the tone and it’s a track that went on to sell half a million copies due to its inclusion on a Brazilian soap opera. The rest of the album is just superb as the samba get psychedelic and funky and jazzy. Particularly loving ‘Montral City and ‘Caça A Raposa’ but it’s all brilliant.

Now it’s not often Gilles Peterson plays tracks more than once these days or even more that one track from an album. That’s not the case for the remix/re-edit CD here as he’s been hammering it. Far Out’s Joe Davis (who was spotted at the last Shiftless Shuffle) has put together a collection of eleven all-new remixes by the likes of Mark ‘Troubleman’ Pritchard, Spiritual South, Peanut Butter Wolf (Stones Throw), Harmonic 313, Recloose, Volcov, Marc Mac (4hero), Yam Who? and Mr. Beatnik

Peanut Butter Wolf’s version of ‘Morning’ is very subtle (a surprise?) and found its way on a limited edition 7” backed with Mr. Beatnick’s ‘Linha Do Horizonte’.

Azymuth’s Azimuth doesn’t follow the yin and yang thing of black/white, full/empty. Both the original and the reworks are just as good as each other and the best thing you’ll hear this month.

José Roberto Bertrami, Alex Malheiros, Ivan (Mamão) Conti and Ariovaldo had no idea what they were starting back in 1975 in Rio but what a journey it’s been. And this is nowhere near the end as there’s another brand new album coming out later this year.
