Her voice demands attention; it is powerful yet angelic, flexible and sexy. It comes as no surprise that she once fronted a samba-funk outfit, and an electro group. The eponymous album is mix of funk, dub and electronica under-pinned with the bounce of Brazilian percussion and the squawks and squeaks of the urban life. The album kicks off with the instrumental ‘Vinheta Quebrante’ (subtle, spacey turnatablism meets Afro-beat), before a gentle guitar starts and and Céu’s voice comes in over the swaying beat of ‘Lenda’. The spacey sound pops up throughout meeting classical guitar on ‘Mais Um Lamento’, and lingering blues on ‘10 Contados’. ‘Malemolência’ goes for the reggae vibe with the cuica and cavaquinho guitar thrown in alongside, while the electro influence come in through scratchy samples and reverberating beat of’Roda’. . Ceu’s classical upbringing (her father is a musicologist) ensured a diet of Vila-lobos and Orlando SIlva, and it is apparent throughout the album, as is the influence of producer Antonio Pinto (Central Station and City of God). It’s not clear why it’s taken so long for Céu to land in the UK, those across the Atlantic have been enjoying it for well over a year, yet it is certainly worth the wait, and with summer just beginning its timing couldn’t be better. |
