Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. All but one of the tracks was recorded in Rio de Janeiro by Domenico Lancellotti (vocals, drums, shaker, acoustic guitar, MPC2000, bongo, clave, agogô, tambourine and hand-clap) plus Kassin (keyboards, bass and vocoder) and Moreno Veloso (vocals, ukulele, synth, cello, glokenspiel). In a David Byrne stylee this album mixes up punk, hip hop, nu-jazz, bossa nova, lounge, easy listening and most of the gaps in-between. Although it sounds like an unholy alliance of noise, the CD is anything but. This is a nova-Braziltronica and it just sounds better on every listen. Having said that, the opening track, ‘Alegria, Vai Lá’ (with accompanying video) features a vision of David Brent dressed as a crow doing a disco-Parkour in the subway at carnival time (it’s not all like that). Talking of Carnival, ‘Sincerely Hot’ gets lively with those cowbells and guest appearance by Arto Lindsay amongst others. ‘Te Conividei Pro Samba’ is a modern approach to the samba and ‘Comigo’ is a laid back cool nu-jazzer with some serious deep bass. If you want to go back in time for some more Sexy 70 or La Nueva Onda de Brasil, ‘Aeroporto 77’ could have fitted on either album and that Hammond organ plus vibes is so (airport) lounge. The simple acoustic guitar of ‘Solar’ reminds me of Seu Jorge or Astrud Gilberto as does ‘Telepata’ which is particularly Brazilian Tunng-like, and ‘Tarde de Chegada’ finds Dominico duetting with Nina Miranda (as in Chris & Nina featured on Paz E Futebol). Also there’s some cinematic inspired ‘Tema da Zorra’ with some lovely flute and cello and there’s a quiet ending to the album with ‘Desedida’ (Farewell without a Kiss). What a contrast to ‘Alegria, Vai La’ and the two other odd fellows: ‘Felizes Ncaremos Na Estrada’ sees yet another return of the fuzzy guitar (twice in one week!) whilst ‘Você E Eu’ is the punk ‘Rage Against The’ rap thing with Cuíca! On first hearing you may not know what to make of this album. But give it a couple of plays, ignore the photo of the trio on the back of the CD and get into the chilled-out grooves. There’s something for everyone on this. Reviewed - Domenico+2 - Sincerely Hot (Luaka Bop) Cat. No. VVR1027602 Release Date: May 2005 Links: |
