Gilles Peterson’s got back on the baile funk tip this week playing tracks by DJ Sondrino (who was at Rio Rox last year) and Stereotyp’s ‘Uepa’ (off Funk Mundial) that we we’re big courtesy of Daniel Haaksman. Formerly the leader and singer of De Falla, who produced seven albums of varying musical styles (heavy metal, punk, rock and funk), upon going solo, the natural progression was to a one man Brazilian Beastie Boy of funk, punk and sex. His debut album, Frenétiko has all the hits of the last couple of years, ‘Sex-o-matic’, ‘Hot Mama’ and ‘Popozuda Rock ‘n’ Roll’. If you’re still not sure about this mash-up trend, ‘Funkeiro C.B.’ is typically Edu K. A mix of 80s electro hip hop with electric guitar rock riffs with Edu K and his brother/co-MC Chilli Willi rapping over the top about whatever a Funkeiro C.B. is (answers on the comments box below please). I quite fancy myself as a Funkeiro and Edu is clearly influenced by the all-time great North American Funkeiros like Rick James and Cameo. ‘Faz (Que Eu Gosto)’ gets well into the Harold Faltermeyer period and there’s an ominous Chris Hill type chant on the title track, he’s even used the old 80s disco synths on ‘Sexxxy’ which is how I like to think of Brazil. There’s a great jungle beat to ‘Quero Ser Ator Pornô’ complete with Tarzan call; a modern day ‘Stranded In The Jungle’ of original punk-rockers, New York Dolls. Personally, I prefer the more typically ‘Latin’ tracks than the rocky stuff and the album comes with a couple of reggaeton remixes which really suits his style. When Edu K guested on Stereotyp’s ‘Jece Valadão’ (also check Keepin’ Me) it was largely down to Daniel’s enthusiasm for his new star. I know Daniel has been in Sao Paulo this year and hopefully the follow up album won’t be too far away. In the meantime, check out the re-listen on Peterson’s show (see links below) and get the album. Hectic Mix nominations: ‘Hot Mama’, ‘Sexxy’, ‘Da Punk Funk’, ‘Bundalele’ Reviewed: Edu K — Frenétiko (Man Recordings) Cat. No. MAN 08 Release date: 2006 |
