Federico Aubele - Panamericana

An album inspired by a motorway is probably not the most exciting prospect. The Via Pan-Americana however is no ordinary highway; it runs from Alaska to Cape Horn in Argentina and Federico Aubele has attempted to capture some of the musical traditions from the countries it dissects

Aubele was born in Buenos Aires, where the Pan-American highway was commissioned, but has spent the past five years living elsewhere. Being a foreigner in Europe changed his view of the Americas and it is this new outlook that lies as the inspiration behind the album.

“When I thought about it all my musical influences originate from American countries, be it dub/reggae from Jamaica, Mexican bolero, Argentine tango, or old school US hip hop. So the idea of a road that links these disparate places and cultures together became a very strong influence on the album,” he explains.

The 13 track ‘Panamerican’ features guitars, bandoneon and horns with all Spanish vocals laid down over congas, drums and at time heavy bass beats. The influence of the tango is clear but there are also hints of bolero, dub bass lines, hip hop beats and electronica sounds. Aside from ‘Lluvia’, penned by Gonzal Gaces, each song is Aubele’s own.

A variety of Soth American artists feature on the recording such as singer/songwriter Amparo Sanchez of Amparonica, the Colombian singer Vernie Varela and long time collaborator Natalia Clavier. Trumpets and wah wah guitars come courtesy of Calexico, while it was produced by Thievery Corporations’ Eric Hilton.

The sound is one that will appeal to fans of the Gotan Project thought it boasts somewhat sexier vocals.
