Juana Molina - Un Dia

A sonic evolution for for the Argentine actress turned songstress

Juana Molina - Un Dia

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Un Dia is the fifth disc from Juana Molina and marks her progression into more experimental territory. While her previous albums Son and Tres Cosas could easily be labelled as modern folk, Un Dia does away with these traditional song structures, and for the most part, the lyrical content, favouring instead an exploration of the sonic texture of her voice in the context of hypnotic, minimal instrumentals.

Her unmistakable vocals are transported to new levels through looping, layering and experimentation while the songs stretch on for seven or eight minutes with recurring themes, criss crossing rhythms and acoustic guitar loops. Tracks such as opener ‘Un Dia’ and ‘Los Hongos de Marosa’ are rhythmically pressing, pushing forward, thrown against Molina’s vocal and guitar samples. ‘Quien? (Suite)’ begins in more familiar Molina territory but builds with wordless and incessant vocal loops, set against a single guitar theme exploration.

Un Dia is a progressive album in which Molina experiments with her own voice, approaching it as an instrument in it’s own right. The album steers away from the folk label often attached to her early work, becoming lost in the mix and replaces it with warm, compulsive explorations of sound and rhythm. While at first Un Dia is somewhat inaccessible, the expected “songs” are not to be found, after repeated listening, you cannot help but lose yourself in the hypnotic soundscapes. Molina is an artist redefining how she uses her voice, for many the album may well be too distant from her previous work but for others it is an intriguing evolution of the singers sound and direction.
