V/A - Latinesque

The sound of summer is here again, courtesy of The Kemia Bar at Momo’s, a fresh and charming club in London’s West End that evidently knows how to have a good time. With new takes on old classics and somehow finding a rare middle ground between old and original, your heart will thank you for listening to this.

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Self-depicted as being ‘the story of how Latin music has travelled and evolved’, the mix of artists takes you on a spiritual, body-moving journey through one of the most satisfying and happy of genres, leaving nothing to the imagination. It is a collective representation of the then and now of Latin music, rising into pumping anthems and then dipping into heartfelt calm.

Notable tracks include the remixed opener, ‘Watermelon Man’ by Poncho Sanchez (manipulated by Dan the Automator), which is diced and spliced into a brilliant body-mover. Fifth track in and there is the downright obscene ‘Jungle Fever’, with flustered, breathless groans of the Sexy Fever taking yet another willing couple into the depths of sordid ecstasy.

Equally empowering are ‘Alcajazz’ (by Novalima) and ‘Kind of Latin Rhythm’ (from The Juju Orchestra), offering swinging and sultry mamba guitars, thrusting percussion and an undercurrent of dance beats. Alternatively, there are suave and classy samples in amongst the jazz-Latin vibe that is effortlessly produced. All will have their appeal to someone; it’s hard to see how anyone could resist the charm.

Latinesque is a brilliant mix of traditional, danceable rhythms twisted with an alluring modern edge that draws you in further and further until you suddenly realise that you’ve converted your front room into a dance floor. Vines have suddenly grown up your wall and your entire neighbourhood is having the party of a lifetime, sucking on strange cocktails and drenched in imported Mediterranean sun.

First and foremost, this CD makes you realise that Latino has been given a new lease of life and it isn’t just the mindless promotional ramblings of a desperate record promoter… So if you’re unable to escape the city for a break, put this on and you won’t need to.
