Nilo Espinosa - Shaken, Not Stirred |
And unfortunately, this would be a good summary of Vampisoul Records’ latest compilation. According to the promotional material, the sound of Peruvian artist Nilo Espinosa should be hailed for its attitude, quality and freshness. But none of those adjectives should be used to describe the 18-track look-back to his ‘finer’ days. As cheesy as it might sound, ‘Shaken, not stirred’ left me dinstinctly unshaken and stirred (but only with restlessness and boredom). There’s too many instrumental tracks, all of which follow the standard latin jazz formula, and when you do get to something different, it sits terribly out of kilter with the feel of the collection. I’m sure that for the real Peruvian purists or genuine fans of Nilo then this album will be a must in their CD racks. However, for the average music fan, there’s already too much competition out there for this to cause too much trouble in the niche market charts. |

Sorry but I don´t agree with Leon Moran´s review of the Nilo Espinosa´s album Shaken Not Stirred. Gotta say I am NOT a “Peruvian purist” or a Nilo Espinosa´s fan (I´d only heard a couple of his songs before buying this compilation), but I enjoyed the record very much and would recommend it to the average music fan (like myself) who´s not a hardcore latin/jazz-head but want to have a good groovy sample of the genre.
