Quarteto Brasil - Bossa Nova Delicado

Bossa Nova Delicado is not traditional Brazilian music nor does it attempt to be; it’s light, breezy Bossa, erring on the jazz side rather than the samba vibe

quareto brasil

It has a laid back, some may say dreamy quality provided mostly by Zé Canuto’s lingering saxophone that underpins much of the album. It lacks the soul of traditional samba but then considering the name Delicado or “Delicate” that may well be the point.

Quarteto Brasil are by no means newcomers to the music business and between them have arranged for, played and recorded with most of the big names in Brazilian music including; Chico Buarque, Gal Casta, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, João Bosco and Edu Lobo. Their leader Cristovão Bastos co-wrote ‘Raios de Luz’ for Barbara Sternson’s A Love Like Ours album while bassist Bororo has been lauded by Peter Gabriel. Jurim Moreira, famous in Europe for his work with Montreux and UmbriaJazz is on drums while Marçalzinho features as a special guest percussionist.

These are clearly four very talented musicians and the textured minimalist approach works well though if you like your like your Brazilian music action-packed and made to dance to this is unlikely to impress.
