Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. Barretto’s career spanned much of the genre’s post-war development and crosses easily between Latin soul, funk, boogaloo and jazz. He recorded nine albums with Fania between 1968 and 1975 and Latin Soul Man chronicles the period in which he first achieved cross-over success. Tracks range from the laid back ‘Soul Drummers’ through the Ottis Reading like ‘The Teacher of Love’ and funky piano driven ‘Right On’ to the bass heavy scream infused ‘El Bantu’. The album provides a balance of the competing genres and documents Nueva York’s coming of age when African, Latino and American influences first came together. |
