Tanghetto - Emigrante (Electrotango)

Argentina continues to re-explore and reinterpret its musical heritage, as a new release follows in the footsteps of Gotan Project to bring the distinctive sound of tango to a beat-hungry global audience.

Tanghetto - Emigrante

However, despite the similarity of the two ventures, instead of following the hip hop/dub path, Tanghetto feed their tango vibes through a filter of house beats and ambient grooves, evoking a stylish beach-bar atmosphere and painting breezy pictures of South Atlantic indolence.

Tanghetto (a play on words, which also means ‘so ghetto’) comprises accordionist Daniel Ruggiero and producers Santyago Ferrari and Zebastian Entrala, and their reverbed melodies, lazy piano chords and crisp programmed drums are laid out on a shimmering background of strings.

There is very little textural or instrumental variation between tracks, something which they try to counteract by giving each track a little poem elucidating its significance in the liner notes: ‘The brown ocean is our mirror’, ‘The exile of the soul in each of our words. In all our movements.’ Needless to say, the tracks still all sound the same.

The album is dedicated to refugees and wanderers, and yet the music seems more befitting a cocktail bar than a city of tents. It’s all very well made, and some of it shows an admirably un-decadent solemnity. But overall it drifts just too far that side of cheesiness, and the lack of variation makes no one track, or the album itself, for that matter, particularly memorable. Get some vocalists, amigos.

COMMENTS

Cheesiness?? Never heard a less cheesy electrotango band in my life. Tanghetto put the “e” for “excellence” in tango and electro fusion. I recommend.

This amateur reviewer doesn’t seem to know that Emigrante was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Instrumental Album Category. It’s a shame that reviewers with no talent or knowledge are the ones that can keep away listeners from getting to discover very good albums.

Henry,

You seem to be labouring under the impression being nominated for an award immediately means you should be lauded. Should opinion really be dictated by those who dole out Grammy Awards?
