Tutty Moreno feat. Joyce - Magica

This album was originally called ‘Tocando Sentido Suando’ but I tend to agree with those wise samba heads at Far Out Recordings, Magica is an apt title.

Tutty Moreno - Magica

‘Tocando Sentido Suando’ (translates as playing, feeling, sweating) and was recorded in 1981 when Tutty had already made a name for himself in Brazil as a drummer. The title track itself starts with a drum solo and features the vocals of Joyce (this being the year after she recorded her Feminina album). She also sings on ‘Camaleão’ and plays acoustic guitar on five other tracks.

However the tracks for the samba-jazz dancers are ‘Constelacão’ (featuring a great alto sax solo by Mauro Senise and acoustic bass of Ricardo Santos) and ‘Algo Sobre Nos’ (notable for the electric guitar of Claudio Guimares).

Joyce, who started out in Luiz Eça’s Familia Sargrada, also sings on ‘Camaleão’ and she wrote ‘Pega Leve’; both featuring the flute of Paulo Guimares for that summer breeze.

This is such a monsterously good album for a debut, perhaps only bettered by a certain Azymuth? Stay tuned for more on their reissue of the debut album bythe Bazilian jazz band very soon! But Far Out Recordings seem to have a thing for brilliant debut albums. Whether it’s reissues like this or the debut of new outfits, like the Democustico album of last year.

Even though it was Valentines day this week, ‘Pianco’ is for your dinner jazz lovers and falls into the soppy category. But that apart, these eight tracks come it at just over the half hour and are indeed magica!

And more good news, after a 25-year gap, Far Out had the excellent idea to commission a follow-up album. Due out this summer, Tutty says, “The sound may have changed but the heart is still the same”. Now that’s going to be worth waiting for me thinks.
