He made a salsa version of the classic ‘Ne me quitte pas’ (Jacques Brel). The unlikely star became a massive success in Paris and his album, Herencia Africana, which had been financed by a friend, got bought by a major and he became a promising young name to watch out for. A few years later, Yuri delivered the Classic Yo Soy, one of the most important salsa albums by a Europe-based artist. He took salsa to a new level, fusing Afro-Colombian traditions into a tight Puerto Rican arrangement, with the help of some of the most important figures of the salsa world, salsa such as Papo Luca, Jerry Rivas and Chelie Aponte. The songs ‘Salsa’ and ‘Salsa Raï’ ( a duet with Raï star Faudel) are classics of the genre already. His 3rd — although not well received by fans and critics — saw Yuri in a couple of duets with the legendary Cheo Feliciano. This album, The Best of Yuri Buenaventura, compiles the essence of this young salsa star. An album where you won’t find a bad song, not even the Hip Hop ‘Donde estas’ (with Orishas). Includes the already mentioned ‘Ne me quitte pas’, ‘Salsa’ and ‘Salsa Raï’ plus 11 tracks for the dancers or for fans of good salsa. Highly recommended. |
