He left this earth at such an early age on Friday 10th February as this latest album, Donuts had only been released the previous Tuesday, the day of his 32nd birthday. He was born in Detroit and made a name as the producer with The Pharcyde, Common, A Tribe Called Quest and as founder of Slum Village. In addition to his solo career, he and fellow rapper-producer Madlib produced the highly acclaimed Champion Sound as Jaylib in which each rapped over the other’s beats. On a personal note, this was the first white label I ever got marking the start of my journalistic exploits. He moved to Los Angeles to live with his mother since he was found to have the immune-system disease Lupus about three years ago. Lupus is a disease in which a person’s immune system goes into overdrive and attacks the body’s normal, healthy cells (see links below). He’d also recently had also finished a compilation album called Welcome To Detroit, Vol. 2 which will be released on BBE. There’s going to be an official Jay Dee Tribute Night with the backing of Stones Throw records at: WESTBOURNE STUDIOS, SUNDAY 5TH OF MARCH (1900-0100) with DJs Benji B (1Xtra), Eric Lau, Daz-I-Kue (Bugz In The Attic, Silhouette Brown, etc) + more to be confirmed. For up-to-date details check www.jaydeetribute.com A Worldwide thank you, Dilla Forever, RIP. Links: |

COMMENTS 10 02 08 : J-DILLA CHANGED MY LIFE To mark the 2nd Anniversary of his passing on 10th February 2006 & to celebrate what would have been his 34th Birthday on 7th February 2007 The Doctor’s Orders in association with Stussy UK are throwing the second of what will be an annual party dedicated to the memory and the music of this incredible Hip-Hop producer; J-Dilla. Once again there has no been no shortage of top name DJs wanting to offer their services for free in order to mark their respect for the man who created the beats that keep clubs they work bumping week in week out. In his brief 32 years J-Dilla, otherwise known as Jay-Dee or James Yancey created and shaped a new sound for Hip-Hop that inspired beat smiths, MCs and music lovers around the globe. With an incredible line of production credits for De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, The Pharcyde, Janet Jackson, Busta Rhymes, Common, D’Angelo, his own crew Slum Village and so many more it is little wonder that J-Dilla has been described as a visionary, a genius & the quintessential producers’ producer by some of the most respected names in the game. The fact that both Pharell Williams & Kanye West name him as their major inspiration speaks volumes to the influence of his distinctive “Dilla sound”. His own albums “Rough Draft” & “Doughnuts” on Stones Throw and “Welcome 2 Detroit” & “The Shining” on BBE Records stand out as masterpieces of modern music production and capture the imagination of producers, DJs & all music lovers across the world. Some of the UK’s most respected DJs will be stepping up on the night to play their favorite tracks by a true legend. Cargo London |
