New Jazz Radio Station in UK

Some great news for fans of jazz in the UK, it would appear that the people who turned classical music into something people actually wanted to listen to are about to take up the option for a national jazz station on digital radio

The following is an excerpt from a piece that jazz stalwart Digby Fairweather has written for the Musicians Union magazine.

“A few weeks ago OFCOM - the authority for independent radio - authorized eight new DAB stations with a recommendation that one such channel should cover jazz music properly. DAB, just in case you haven’t heard yet, is Digital Audio Broadcasting; the medium which has been called the re-birth of radio.

“Pop into Curry’s Smith’s or any of the other high street stores who are being over-run with requests for the neat little radio receivers that pick up DAB station and you’ll have access to hundreds of new bubbling radio channels answering just about every broadcasting need! Well anyhow - almost over night - Classic FM, under the aegis of its governing body Gcap took up the jazz option.”

Hurray! We will await anxiously the start of broadcasting, thought to be later this year.

Great news providing the music is not diluted as my friend Dave Lee discovered shortly after he lauunched Jazz FM.

Take a look at the Jazz page on my website: www.lyricsforclassics.com

Great music - I’ve been listening over the Christmas holiday - keep it up; please don’t go the same way as Jazz FM did and resort to playing insipid so-called ‘smooth jazz’. My only criticism is the lack of information on the record played - I appreciate that you don’t want to interupt the flow of music but a short announcement after each track (or after 2 tracks) would be very useful! It’s frustrating to hear a piece I like and would like to buy a CD but not knowing what it was!

Found this great station on my DAB radio purely by chance,if it were advertised more I am sure that you would go from strength to strength. There are very many jazz lovers in this area who have not heard about it or are not computer owners and I guess they would give much support to your endeavour. Do you have any literature to hand out?

I have just purchased a Cambridge Audio 640T DAB Tuner, mainly in order to play THE JAZZ programme. I seem only to get it in mono. Is it transmitted in sterio?

I have just been informed of the existence of “the jazz” on DAB and I am very excited about it: it’s what I have been waiting for for a long long time. I don’t seem to be able to find it on my DAB radio. Can you help me with more information? Also is there a specific website dedicated to “the jazz”?
Thanks

Good to have a jazz program, but I have heard little trad or dixiland or good old fashioned blues. digby fairweather wrote a piece for you, but do you ever play him? There is a large trad audience still out there - they might be getting older - but they have purchasing power. make your advertisers happy and play more trad and less be bop and mainstream, and then make me happy!!!

For a while now I have enjoyed THE JAZZ, unadulterated well selected jazz. But now we have to listen for 5 minutes while 3 people discuss the 5 minute track that has just been broadcast. Worse than pundits at half time on the football game.

You have lost me. I had expected a few quick intelligent commercials to finance the program, but studio wall to studio wall chattering between the music is my total put off.

Good by thejazz, once you were excellent, now it is all chatter, punctuated by some music.

Why the hell do you f**k up the best radio program?

Hello Fly,
Like most of the messages, can you let me have the wavelength.
Thanks.

Friday 25 May 2007

Hi Dave - as it is digital, it doesn’t really have a wavelength to point to but if you have a DAB radio, just twiddle the dial until the name comes up. If not, try the website at http://www.thejazz.com/ to listen online.

Great station. Been listening since I discovered it on satelite TV and since have bought a digital radio so I can listen whenever and wherever. I especially like how on digital radio it displays title and artist. Excellent listening - keep it up & keep it going.

I’ve been listening to the Jazz since May. I think the choice of music is great, and the presenters are understated and appropriate. I particularly like Anthony Davies and Helen Mayhew.

I have yet to hear this station, but please God there is some classic jazz and swing on it, unlike jazz fm which, everytime I tried it, seemed to be playing middle of the road latin-american dance music!!

Hi there,
I have been around for a while now playing and composing and collection my recorded works that I have written in many jazz styles over the years with talented but unknown musicians who I have met along the way.I have compiled an album titled “Contemporary Jazz” which I am over the moon with and has been sign up by DigiMix Records. It is now down loadable on 7Digital where who can hear snippets and iTunes.I of course would like to have my music heard and I would love for jazz D J’s on the radio to preview the tracks and perhaps air some of my music,I list the tracks below from the album, and also I taste of my bio.It was hard enough to get recognition as a writer and artist by a record company and now I need help to get the listen jazz public hear it.Can you assist or have any suggestions that may help please.Thanking you in anticipation.
