New TV Slot For African Artists - MTV Base UK

Africa’s Hottest Musicians to turn up the temperature on ‘Global Warming’

UK music lovers could soon become experts on African beats such as kwaito, Afro-zouk, m’balax, hiplife, dancehall and Afro-beat if programmers at MTV base have their way. The urban music channel which broadcasts to 9 million households in the UK and Ireland via the Sky Digital, NTL and Telewest Broadband TV platforms, has created a regular slot for African artists and videos on late night music video programme, ‘Global Warming’.

Around 70 percent of videos on ‘Global Warming’ will be focused on the artists and music of sub-Saharan Africa, with the remaining 30 percent made up of artists from the rest of the world. To ensure that music content reflects what’s really happening on the contemporary African music scene, all African music video content for the show is drawn from recommendations made by music programmers at MTV’s base (Africa).

Among the African artists featuring regularly on ‘Global Warming’ are likely to be some of the African continent’s finest contemporary musicians, including: Bee Dee (Nigeria), Kaysha (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Zamajobe (South Africa), Perola (Angola) and Benon and Vamposs (Uganda). Dancehall act Bee Dee is currently scoring a big hit on the Nigerian club circuit right now with ‘Shorty’, while Kaysha’s Afro-Zouk ‘One Love’ combines African drumming beats with American and Caribbean pop rhythyms. Afro Pop ingenue Zamajobe shows off her unique fusion of jazz, gospel and dance music in ‘Magic’, while R’n’B female singer Perola represents for Angola with ‘Break It’; Benon and Vamposs showcase the best of Ugandan rap with ‘Mumuleete’.

MTV’s African music channel, MTV base (Africa) which launched 22 February 2005, have worked tirelessely since launch to encourage other MTV channels around the world to air African music videos and artists. All MTV networks around the world aired MTV base 100th LIVE!, a celebration of MTV’s 100th channel milestone taped in Abuja, Lagos and Johannesburg, South Africa in April 2005. MTV European, sister channel to MTV base, also started airing African music videos in November 2005, making its African debut with South African rapper Pro-Kid’s video ‘Wozo Bona’ . Other African videos featuring on World Chart Express on MTV European include Nigeria’s ‘Street Life’ by Streetmonks ft Questionmark Allstars.

Commented Alex Okosi, Vice President & General Manager, MTV base (Africa): “We are thrilled that our MTV colleagues around the world are opening up their airwaves to the grooves and beats of Africa’s finest contemporary musicians. The contemporary music scene on the African continent is almost infinitely varied, hugely creative and thorougly stimulating and we relish this chance to give African artists the international attention and exposure they deserve!”

African music videos feature fortnightly on Global Warming on MTV base (UK) at midnight from Monday 23 January 2006.
