Fly Guide - Montreal

So you want to know what’s up in Montreal? This is one of the hottest cities on the planet, known for decades for its party life and raw underground culture

montreal

Well, there are a lot of places to choose from but here are some of the most spectacular gems this place has to offer… 737 is one of the hottest spots in town, this is a rooftop club on the top of one of the city’s highest buildings right in the heart of Montreal. During the summer the entire roof is open as an outdoor bar and patio, with stunning views of both the entire city and the great looking people of Montreal. Definitely a must see, the best place to spend your first night.

If you are looking for the best looking clientele in town, try Time supper club down by the port or W Hotel in the same area. These places are very expensive but known for their gorgeous staff and patrons. Club Opera on St. Catherine Street is quite possibly the nicest club though, with a long line up and the hottest music in town. Metropolis is right across the street and is the best live venue in town, located in an old theater — these people bring in the best underground acts around. Also good for this kind of hipster, underground crowd is Café Chaos.

St. Laurent and Crescent Street are the busiest places on the weekend and they have the most/best bars overall. Both are filled with the college age hangouts mixed with the older crowd — a trademark of Montreal. The biggest rave of the year is the Bal en Blanc, where tens of thousands descend on downtown Montreal to stay all night with the world’s top DJs flown in from everywhere. For a touch of Bal en Blanc every weekend, try the Stereo after-hours club in the heart of the Gay Village. Current resident DJs include DJ Chus, Victor Calderone, Hector Romera, DJ Vibe, Danny Torrence and legendary part-owner David Morales.

Montreal has world-ranked electronica and also world ranked jazz. The Montreal International Jazz Festival is one of the largest in the world, shutting down the entire city for a whole week in July. The House of Jazz is the epicenter of great jazz throughout the entire year though, people fly in from all over the world to experience what Montreal has to offer in this area. For a quieter start to your evening, the best cafe in town is Paris Café right on the corner of Crescent and St. Catherine and Shed Café. The best pubs are Sainte-Elizabeth pub, St-Sulpice and Peel Pub.

If you’re looking for something to eat, Montreal has everything. From the incredibly classy supper clubs like Buene Notte and Med, to the best international selection found anywhere, Montreal cannot be beat. For African food try Abiata (incredible Ethiopian food), try Bayou Brazil for great Cajun or Brazilian food, Café Santropol for vegetarian or La Iguana for Mexican. Each place has an authentic atmosphere and food that isn’t too crazily priced (the supper clubs have alright food, but the prices are out of this world if you are not used to bottle service everywhere you go).

If you are here in the summer, go see the International Fireworks Festival at the old Six Flags amusement park La Ronde. For about fifty-five dollars you can get yourself a seat right in front of where they are set off for the judges and with free wine or beer this is one of the most amazing sights you will ever experience (trust me). If you are just looking for a big crowd and good music without anything too unique, try Club Vatican, Rouge or Lodge. These places are always packed with locals who are not looking to dress up too much for the night. Remember too that Montreal is known for its dollar pizza slices, amazing poutine and just about any other late night craving you might have. 24 hour coffee shops give you a mid-evening break on your way to the after-hours clubs, all of which are absolutely packed with people and home to world renown resident DJs.
