Movement - Detroit's Electronic Music Festival 06

Just enough time left to retrospectively recap on this year’s Electronic Music Festival in Detroit, the home of techno.

Started in 2000, we had a look at the line up in 2004 but there’s a full history of the event on Wikipedia including news of the re-branding for this year as ‘Movement, Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival’.

By the sounds of Gilles Peterson’s feature on his show, there’s still life in it yet as the original heroes of techno pick out some of the future stars. This was then outshone by the following show, ‘One World’ with interviews and mixes by Derrick May and Kevin Reynolds.

As of the time of writing they still haven’t posted the tracklisting but that brilliant track Derrick May plays first is a techno (or as he would say, “Hi-Tech Soul”) version of ‘Jupita’ by friend of Fly, Megablast with Stereotyp on the remix (as included on the Carl Craig compilation, Fabric 25).

As Derrick explains, Paxahau is taking on the marketing of this event and there’ll be archives on the web site (see Links below). Next year I’ll get more prepared for this event but you don’t have to wait that long if you are near Detroit. To keep the ‘Movement’ momentum, there’s a Paxahau showcase on the Friday of Comerica Tastefest (30th June - 4th July) with Rich Korach and Josh Wink (who played at Movement ‘06). This looks like another great festival with a huge variety of stuff going on, with a Wendell Harrison guest spot on Saturday afternoon and Jeremy Ellis, John Arnold and Amadou et Mariam in the evening! That’s Fly.

These local troubadours perform 1930s-style hot jazz swing music inspired by the legendary gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Founders of “Djangofest,” they’ve played over 300 performances around town. Special guest jazz saxophonist-clarinetist Wendell Harrison joins them for this show.
