How did you get to know each other and when?
Our history is intertwined with the web-radio station Dublab.com. Carlos was a resident DJ there and I had a Thursday slot playing all manner of strange music. I think Carlos was at first not interested in what I had going on, I don't blame him he had a lot of excellent sounds to put down, but over time I think some things intrigued him about my own music and we became fast friends from that point on.
I had a love affair with Wales since I was very young
Carlos is your Spaceways Radio show still on & where or are you too busy?
Spaceways is on KPFK 90.7 FM In Los Angeles or www.kpfk.org. I'm there every Friday night from 8-10 pm PST and when I leave town I have another DJ sit in for me or I pre-record.
Daedelus what's your background?
I'm grounded in live music performance (playing bass clarinet, double bass and a few other instruments) but I've also been heavily involved in electronic sounds for some time. My earliest musical memories involve Funkadelic, rave (the UK Hardcore variety), be bop, and Musique Concret. It wasn't so much of a jump when I started DJing, but the music I then discovered (jungle, breakcore, IDM, broken beat plus many others) is the lovely life I lead.
Your US label is Plug Research, apart from Daedelus, who would you recommend are worth checking out and why?
Dntel is a genius! Milosh's record is one of the best of the year and my band Build An Ark had its official US Release through Plug Research.
Daedelus: you had a CD out called 'Of Snowdonia' early last year, are you familiar with the Snowdon area and if so, how?
I had a love affair with Wales since I was very young. I titled "Of Snowdonia" as a love letter in a way. I've only been to that region once when I was a young 13, but it left an over-arching effect. Perhaps someday I'll leave my comfortable Los Angeles climate and dare the far colder Welsh countryside.
Ammoncontact's first release in the UK was on Soul Jazz; how did you get involved with a small record shop in London?
They hit me up directly with an e-mail titled "Soul Jazz Calling" and I was with it. We had just released our first EP which was a demo on Eastern Developments. We were going to release Beat Tape Personalities ourselves but the connect with Soul Jazz was at the right moment and we did it.
Beat Tape Personalities included 'The Stars Are Singing Too' which was the first I'd heard of Build An Ark. How did the Build an Ark project come about?
Build An Ark came together when I brought everyone in the band together to do that track. There are roots to the project from beyond that but I wanted to get these particular cats together to record and try to reach a new generation with a vision for a more awakened way of looking at the world. I work closely with vocalist Dwight Trible and all of the other artists in the band and it was -- and continues to be -- a wonderful collaboration.
There was a great vibe to the album, you could almost feel the 'oneness' of the group, are there any plans for a follow up?
We will be recording a new album sometime this summer with a release toward the end of the year.
Gilles Peterson really supported the album (another lover of Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders etc) and you are doing a session for Gilles Peterson while you are over here. Is there any other DJ/Show you know of that champions such a range of jazz.
Gilles is special because he has broken through in such a massive way. He is a great supporter of the music and it's always appreciated. If you want to hear the best jazz program in the world though, you have to check out my good brother Mark Maxwell - rise on KPFK 90.7 FM Sundays from 11PM -- 2AM.
Ninja is taking us to the next level and we want to go there
Are there any other gigs you are doing in UK/Europe?
We have some great radio spots. Mixing it on Radio 3 in a few hours, 1xtra with Benji B later in the week and Cargo on Saturday the 22nd.
Some reviews of 'One In An Infinity Of Ways' were mixed. Which tracks do you think work best?
We have a new track called 'Inspired By The Critics That Weren't Really Feelin' Our Music'. So long as the critic really listened and wrote whatever they wanted in an intelligent and thoughtful way, we don't have any problem being dissed. Those that don't listen and who are either mean, reactionary or ignorant can be frustrating. Music criticism is a trip... I was a writer for many years when I was a bit younger and I didn't waste my time writing about things that I didn't like. As a writer, you can shine light on strengths and weeknesses that you see or you can just be an idiot. I urge people to listen and be thoughtful or don't even bother.
All of our tracks work for us. The hope is that they will work for others.
From the song titles alone (e.g. 'Love Letters', 'Infinity of Rhythm', 'Like Waves of the Sea'), you could think it was a West Coast 60s LP -- what are your favourite groups/albums of that era?
From the West Coast? 60s? Love's 'Forever Changes' and Horace Tapscott's 'The Giant is Awakened'.
Your first album was called 'Sounds Like Everything', who thought of that and why?
I title everything and Fabian only comments with a yes or no type response. Sounds Like Everything was a good way of saying that we celebrate our influences. Listening and making music is infinite so the title had to reflect that too.
'One In An Infinity Of Ways' is your second album and your latest on Ninja -- are there any similarities/differences with Plug Research/Kindred Spirit?
Ninja is taking us to the next level and we want to go there. We want to talk to you and play our music in clubs and on the radio for as many people as we can. It's a wonderful and steady incline that we are on.
As a band that could do a gig at festivals?
We will be supporting vocalist Dwight Trible with a hybrid band that will mix Ammoncontact, Build An Ark and Daedelus if schedules permit.
We'll be looking forward to that. And there's that sixties style community spirit feel again. Carlos ended the interview with "Have a beautiful day!" I think I will and wish all you all infinite love. Peace.
P.S. Amar Patel gives 'One in an Infinity of Way' a good review in Winter 2004's Straight No Chaser. "Nuclear Jazz right out of the Arkestra" meets "Hip hop -- the next chapter". Excellent.
