In 2007, he released possibly his seventh album after the 2002 debut album with Alice Russell and his The Quantic Soul Orchestra. It is quite astonishing that he is still only in his mid 20s. “I like the sound of it”, says Quantic aka Will Holland about his music name, Quantic. “The meaning has a lot to do with what I do as a producer/musician.” Quantic continues, “I have always selected different musicians for the band, the line up changes a lot. Firstly, I find interesting musicians to record with then I put together a live band to support the album.” His music relates to soul and funk heads but opens musical minds with his eclectic musical visions. This genre crossing is especially evident on Quantic’s superb latest album Tropidelico, which came out at the end of last year on Tru-Thoughts Recordings. This album has twelve songs with three collaborations, J-Live, Noelle Scaggs (mostly known as lead singer of The Rebirth), and Kabir. Covering genres such as occidental, soul descargo, soul montuno, bugalu, soul, blues, and such. So where does he draw his eclectic musical influences from? “Probably early DJ Krush material, Goldie and assorted drum and bass was the first dance music I was listening to. Before that was folk, rock, and blues from my fathers collection.” Quantic has remixed up to 30 songs including ones from Charlie Parker and Breakstra. Shared the live stage with De La Soul and hit a few soul notes with Sharon Jones & Mr. Scruff. He released an album during 2006 with Spanky Wilson. He says, “I was a big fan of her work in the 60s with HB Barnhurn. I found that she used to live in Paris and a French friend found me her number. By that time she had moved back to LA. We met and recorded material together both in the US and UK.” “Yes I am content with my work”, admits Quantic. “I always want more, there are a lot of corners and world to explore.” His influences are broader than just music. “Everyday life, my girlfriend, family, things I see on the street, music, books, photos.” And on his future? “Continuing working here in Cali and recording a lot more music… It can be a lot easier if you have a sound you need, to go straight to the source, although it can be difficult to get a good, cohesive sound in many different locations.” While many of his contemporaries are mixing it up with the young guns, Quantic goes his own way, “I’m recording older musicians in their 60s and 70s this is a real life experience because they have so much knowledge and ‘sabor’ to give” Quantic still has countries that he has yet to crate-dig, DJ in and make music from.
