Temika Moore explains how her career began, “Well, Matthew, I began my journey at the age of nine. But I’d say I really started to chart the course for my career in 1998 when I made the decision to start More II Come Entertainment.” Also, Temika Moore has opened for Cassandra Wilson, Selena Johnson, Jennifer Holiday, Melba Moore, and Jean Carne. She says, “Wow, there are so many that have contributed to my aural personalities. I initially grew up listening to the gospel greats such as the Clark Sisters and then became immersed in the music of soulful, sultry vocalists such as Anita Baker and Oleta Adams.” “I am doing great. I’ve been promoting my latest CD Doing Just Fine. I am getting ready to release a new single and new video.” Though, Temika Moore studied her craft before taking it professionally, she tells her story herself. “While attending high school and college, I studied classical applied voice and also had the opportunity to perform with University of Maryland Eastern Shore Jazz Ensemble under the direction of John Lambik. As a result, I became the first recipient of the Ella Fitzgerald Music Scholarship. During my time with jazz ensembles, I fell in love with classic jazz vocalists and contemporaries such as Rachelle Ferrell and Lizz Wright to name a few.” “Actually, my family was very against me deciding to pursue a career in music”, says Temika Moore. “However, when I matriculated into University of Maryland Eastern Shore, I studied Sociology, Pre-Law, as my major but took additional courses in music to support my education costs. I was studying to become an attorney. However, the desire to be a musician was greater that my desire for the law. Even though my family was against a music career, ironically it helped my college education” She continues, “I have been learning to play percussion instruments (which are my favorites) and the piano. While I believe in being well rounded, I will forever be a life long learner of my first craft-the voice.” “Thank you Matthew. I appreciate the support”, after I complemented her. “I actually am a neophyte when it comes to song writing. I actually start writing out of necessity. I was unable to find material that represented me or conveyed what I wanted to say. This is an area for which I am a perpetual learner as well” Temika Moore proceeds, “I was among the top ten songwriters chosen for the Recording Academy’s Grammy in the Streets program in 2003. The panel of industry greats for a CD compilation selected Holding On To You from my very first CD Moments Of Truth.” Temika Moore releases her latest album independently called Doing Just Fine. An inspirational collection of current songs taken from Temika Moores personal life, yet sung on a more soul tip. Temika Moore says, “Yes, the new album is more of a soulful take on my material. I believe I evolved and developed as a person and songwriter. I know the kiss of death in this industry is to be broad and versatile, but I felt a strong desire and need to be very fluid with this latest album. I felt the lyrical and melodic content of the project should shine through. Its funny, some people consider the project soul, R&B, and others consider it contemporary with elements of jazz, and yet others consider it eclectic and folksy. I think it depends on the receiver of the music what elements speak most to the listener.” “You are gracious”, after another compliment on her music. “I believe my sound comes from drive and a strong will. The technical know how comes from the powerhouse, the diaphragm and years of classical voice training. I was always told, if you can sing a classical piece with ease, then you could sing anything”, says Temika Moore regarding her musical identity. Temika Moore has shared stages with Roy Ayers, Marcus Johnson, Allyson Williams and Tony Terry. “There are so many, I would remiss for failing to mention any one particular album. I’d just have to say what is considered classic is relative and today jazz has been stretched to encompass so many elements. I find a new soul or jazz album every day that becomes my favorite. So its hard to mention just one” Her strong studying experiences have helped Temika Moore mold herself into the independent artist that she is today. “I have studied music since 6th grade. I initially studied flute and then when on to study vocal performance. However, I always feel the desire to learn as much as I can about music. There is always a gap that can be filled or an idea that can be developed with more education/I believe you are an asset to someone or a movement when you bring the most of your experiences and education to a situation. Everyone has a desire to feel needed and respected, regardless of the chosen profession” Temika Moore agrees, “Well, I constantly redefine what is important. As I experience more, I realize the things that once consumed my thoughts and life no longer to occupy the same spaces. Living authentically, purposefully, within my means, and living a life that is in the will of God is most important to me.” “I am promoting the new CD Doing Just Fine. I currently am receiving radio airplay and video airplay of my single ‘Light As A Feather’ in the US and in the UK. However, no dates scheduled for the UK as of yet. But if you know of someone that wants to book me for a venue, just have them reach out to me and I’d love to come to the UK. I get so much support and would love to experience the UK”, says Temika Moore. Temika Moore is one of the rare few artists who write, manufacture, promote and market their own music. She founded her company Moore II Come Entertainment and reached many fans. “I guess you can say I have been a ‘jack-of-all-trades’. I started out pursuing my law degree and worked in a law firm specializing in municipal finance, then left the field to pursue my dream. But I knew I still needed income, so I started working for Discovery Channel in various departments, and then went into Telecom Sales, and eventually ended up as a Real Estate Agent. And there were a host of other jobs in-between but I am now where I hope to stay.” |
