Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. As a former sax player with Martha And The Muffins (come on, guilty pleasure or not, who doesn’t like ‘Echo Beach’?) this new CD owes nothing to that experience. More recently he’s played with John Zorn (who’s coming to the UK soon). Mr. Haas has clearly moved on and on this CD he plays shofar, raita, fife, taal tarang with electronics EFX all live with no overdubs. The result is industrial, ambient, middle-eastern, techno, indo/free/space jazz and probably lots more. It’s anything but the “noise” that many folks have trouble with regarding improvised modern jazz. Stand-outs are the hypnotic ‘White Phosphorus’ and the scary ‘BLU 113 Penetrator’ and ‘Depleted Uranium (pts I & II)’. As an anti-war statement, it was never going to be as obvious as Buffy Sainte-Marie’s ‘Universal Soldier’ or Braintax’s ‘Syriana Style’ but even so, it’s a powerful set of ten tracks. Definitely one for the warm up set to Unsafe 3. Andy is currently a member of Radio-I-Ching, The Hanuman Sextet and occasional reunions with The Bush Tetra and The Freestyle Jazz/Avant Garde Musics Deformed Blues at Jimmy’s in NYC. Thanks, mine’s a pint of Victory IPA next time I’m in town. Reviewed: Humanitarian War (Resonantmusic) Cat. No. 003 Release date: 2006 Tracklisting: Links: |
