Chico Hamilton - Believe

The legacy continues. Chico remains on form with a beautifully textured album that stays true to an old jazz ethos and vibe, but executes it so passionately that it sounds as fresh as ever.

Chico Hamilton - Believe

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

Smooth and sunny with touches of Latino spliced with an ultra-slick, John Coltrane-esque mastering of airy hooks from guests Evan Schwam (flute, tenor & soprano sax) and Andrew Hadro (flute, clarinet, alto & baritone sax), the textures could cause breathlessness.

There are warm guitars that would make Wes Montgomery weep in love and adoration, whilst the guest vocals from Fontella Bass (i.e. ‘Love Me a Long, Long Time’) angle the release towards accessible and clever blues jazz.

As a true masterpiece should, it pulls the listener’s emotions this way and that, dunking you into smooth grooves then picking you up and taking you through a soul-felt and somewhat melancholy trip. And of course there are the slick walking bass lines and scuffled beats that transport you into a smoky downtown bar. The combination is a force to be reckoned with and generally leaves you in awe.

This is Beat Jazz at its finest, offered by a notorious drummer/percussionist that knows how to let the individuals in an outfit breath.
