Colossus - 'The Tribute' |

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site. The title track features Capitol A (last scene on the Makossa & Megablast 12”) with remixes from DJ Zeph and Colossus themselves. And there are name checks to ‘audio architects’ Jazzanova, Count Basie and Cab Calloway! The Colossus remix is very jazz hip hop and DJ Zeph breaks out with some organ, which makes the instrumental version very infectious. The other track, ‘Tripney Bits’ follows the same schema as the a-side with three different versions and an even bigger star guest. If the title sounds very British, it’ll be due to Hylton Smythe (aka the Big Dada himslef, Roots Manuva). As ever, very much on top form with characteristic rapid-fire non-stiff upper lip delivery. The Colossus mix is there with old skool beat bounce and scratch, but as the man says, “less is more and more is less”. When I think of Om Records, it’s the house of Afro Mystik and Mark Farina. On the remix of ‘Tripney Bits’, Om’s own J.Boogie has done a fine drum led tribal house saxophone solo twist. J. Boogie is the same guy that did ‘Higher’ on Ubiquity’s HVW8 Presents: Music Is My Art. Again the instrumental comes over all quality with some dubby echo. I’ll be reviewing the album, called West Oaktown shortly and there has been a release party already in San Francisco. There’s another one coming up in March (see below) and a couple of weeks later, Mark Farina will join Colossus on the trip from the West Coast to M3 Summit. Hopefully Mr. Peterson will pick up on them as he’s also out there. What’s a ‘Tripney Bit’ doing on the West Coast anyway? Reviewed: Colossus - ‘The Tribute’ EP (OM Records) Links: |
