Dabrye - Two/Three |

DJ Nick Luscombe’s XFM Flomotion show has supported Dabyre since the early days on Eastern Developments (early adopters of FLY favourites Hu Vibrational, Ammoncontact and Daedelus) and it was appropriate that the first track on the last ever show was ‘No Child Of God’ (see links below for news of Flomotion’s next home). When it comes to underground hip hop electronica, Dabrye (aka Tadd Mullinix) now can call on the likes of Doom, Wildchild (Stones Throw, Foreign Beggars) for some rappin’ and co-producer credits like Waajeed and the late, great Jay Dee. Vast Aire raps on ‘That’s What’s Up’ to old skool pinball-bell-beats and line “my words are gravity, anti”. Talking of anti, another name is Beans who used to be in the Anti-pop Consortium who gives a quick-fire rap on ‘Nite Eats Day’ and the street rap on ‘Special’ comes from Guilty Simpson and Paradime. Of the instrumental beats, try the jazz-inspired ‘Jorgy’ and ‘Tell Dem’ and the bouncy ‘Piano’. Other funky offbeat Daedelus style stutter include ‘Reconsider’ and ‘Get It Together’. The album ends with a Jay Dee track, which has also turned up on compilations The Kings Of Techno and Bass-ment Classics. This album is another chapter is the book of leftfield hip-hop’s progression as it will be no real surprise when this album is crops up in ‘Best of 2006’ lists as there’s no duff-Detroit tracks here. Hectic Mix nominations: ‘That’s What’s Up’, ‘Air’, ‘Game Over’, ‘Reconsider’ and ‘Get It Together’. Reviewed: Dabrye - One/Two (Ghostly International) Cat. No. GI-50 Release date: 6-12-2006 Links |
