David Banner - 'Play'

This one caught my eye but only after I saw the review in Metro, who gave it one star out of five. We’re on the ‘explicit lyrics’ issue again. As the paper says, Mr. Banner spends “four minutes telling his girl to play with herself. No wonder I haven’t heard it on the radio”.

David Banner - Play

Please note this is an old page and Fly Global Music has now moved. Please follow this link and search for the entry in the new site.

But Banner is no mad green Hulk version of Paul Reymond. He hails from Jackson, Mississippi and ‘Play’ is the “untypical” first single from the soon to be released album Certified.

Originally influenced by NWA and A Tribe Called Quest, this will be Banner’s third album. He’s got collaboration credits with Nelly, Twista, Talib Kweli, Lil’ Jon and has production credits for Ludacris, Busta Rhymes and Juelz Santana (these last three all feature in that hip hop chart).

He also gets big Brownie points for personally funding a college scholarship program of five awards totalling $50,000 in 2004. In the same year, Banner reported for MTV News during the Presidential elections highlighting the poor housing and social conditions of Mississippi ghettos.

The b-side is a UK mix of ‘Ain’t Got Nothing’ featuring Durty Goodz and the ever popular Rodney P.

Be warned ‘Explicit Content’ indeed.
